This settlement southeast of Lupoglav, not far from the Učka tunnel, was mentioned as Castrum Vrane in 1102. The first settlement, the so-called Stara Vranja or Gradec, was an old fortress built on a strategically interesting and important site, on a narrow protruding rock, surrounded on three sides by the abysses of torrents flowing from the Učka. Around 1700 it was already in ruins. The St. Peter and Paul’s Church was located on the northern side of the fortress, but this was also demolished in the Second World War but was thoroughly rebuilt in 1997. We recommend a walk along the circular Aurania trail (the name of the former station of the Roman army in the area) which leads to the castle in Boljun, another "guard" of this important valley.
